Nourishing Breakfast 'Porridge'

Try other grain varieties for a warm, nourishing start to the day.

Porridge doesn't need to be oats. In fact oats are not suitable for everyone. Oat are very drying, so definitely not the best choice for Vata types with their tendency towards dryness.

Some alternative 'Porridge' breakfasts are:

  • Quinoa and chai seeds made with almond, rice or coconut milk. Coconut milk has cooling qualities, therefore more suitable for Pitta types. Cook the quinoa following the instructions on the packet. Add chia seeds and allow them to soak before eating as they will be more digestible.
  • Rice porridge: ideal for Pitta or Vata. Add warming spices such as cinnamon, cardamon, ginger and nutmeg to help balance Vata.
  • Buckwheat has warming qualities, so great for Vata and Kapha
Choose your spices to suit your Dosha

Vata and Kapha spices: ground ginger, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, turmeric, cardamon

Pitta spices: coriander seeds, fennel, cardamon, turmeric
